The idea behind Young Dragons began in 2019, when John Conant expressed to Donna Ricci of Geeky Teas & Games that he'd been thinking about putting together a D&D group for kids.
Within the week John was sitting down at their former store location on Magnolia with four players ages 10-14.
Within the night, they'd adopted a direwolf and named him Gobby.
Within a month, that group had invited their friends, doubled in size, and split into two groups.
In 2020, some stuff happened.
These same groups who'd been meeting for a year at Geeky Teas kept playing throughout it all, and even expanded into a third group who was interested in doing some constructive adventuring while the real world fell apart.
It took a lot of hard work and dedication, but over the coming two years these three groups of heroes would eventually wind up saving the world - from devils, demons, an army of giants, and the novel coronavirus.
This heroic and often-overlooked contribution on the part of these brave young heroes paved the way for games to return to in-person play in 2022.
As games started to happen again in-person, John invited his players from the past three years to start leading games for other kids who'd expressed interest in D&D.
With absolutely no input from the kids whatsoever, John started calling this youth-D&D-club "Young Dragons", which he was later informed is "not a very cool name", and "makes it sound like it's for babies".
Young Dragons' offered its first in-person event in March of 2022.
For six months after its first event, Young Dragons pushed ahead, offering one day of games a month for its growing community of adventurers.
In October of 2022, Ray Holdridge reached out to Young Dragons to see how he could get started playing D&D with kids.
By February of 2023, Young Dragons was offering three events a month, plus weekly campaigns for its most dedicated players.
With Ray's help, Young Dragons launched its now-annual Summer of Dragons in 2023, providing weekly games for 22 players, led by 5 teenaged DMs.
In 2024, Young Dragons is still playing D&D at Geeky Teas & Games - although the store has grown, expanded, and moved locations since their first game in March 2022.
Many of the same players from John's original 2019 groups continue to be involved in Young Dragons - as Dungeon Masters in its campaigns and as "Elder Dragons" - influencing how Young Dragons operates and what kinds of events it offers.
